Awareness on the Prevention of Money Laundering (“ML”) and Terrorist Financing (“TF”) using Digital Platform

Digital platforms for performing transactions have made our lives easier and more convenient, but it has also made it easier for laundering illicit money and finance terrorism through tricking, cheating and convincing customers.

Learn how to spot and stop ML/TF, and what you can do to prevent these.
It's important that you frequently monitor your Account/Credit Card activity to help protect yourself from potential ML/TF.
If you suspect that there have been any unauthorized transactions on your Account/Credit Card, please report to our call centre number 16233 or write to us here at sc.com/bd/personal/reachus. While reporting a complaint or raising any suspicion, please provide details such as your name, account number, transaction type, date & time of transaction, description of error and amount involved.

If you suspect that they are due to loss/stealing of Standard Chartered (“SC”) iBanking password, please call at our contact centre to change the password immediately.

You may want to take note of your last log-in date and time, as indicated at the Personal Homepage, each time you log-in to the iBanking service.
There are different kinds of scams: impersonation scam, investment scam, invoice fraud/scam, asking for personal account information to send money and park the same in another account, advance fee scams, fake emergencies etc. But they all work the same way a scammer pretends to be someone you trust to convince you to send them money which in turn can be further used for terrorist financing and money laundering.
With the growing popularity and reliance on online purchases, money launderers are also getting more sophisticated with the ways they deceive and trick unsuspecting online shoppers using digital platforms for scams and laundering money illicitly.
ML/TF activities through cards begin with the theft of either a card or its data: name, number, expiration date, and verification/CVV code. Fraudsters commonly acquire card details online via malware, phishing emails, or sometimes from account statements thrown to unsecured bin, hacking into personal emails etc.

Below are some precautions you can take to safeguard yourself from ML/TF and avoid becoming a victim of debit or credit card information theft:

  • Shred credit card statements before disposing of them.
  • - Review your statements every month. Check for any suspicious transactions and report them immediately to Bank.
  • Never use an easily guessable number as your ATM PIN.
  • Don’t let anyone have access to your PIN. If you think someone has seen your PIN, change it.
  • Don't let your debit or credit card out of your sight during a point-of-sale transaction.
  • Sign the back of your debit or credit card on the signature panel as soon as you receive it
  • Report lost or stolen cards immediately.
  • Report any mobile phone issues (not being able to make calls, send texts, etc.) to your mobile phone provider to ensure a fraudster has not taken over your mobile phone number.

Contact to the call centre immediately if there are any unusual activities in your account.
